De originele 550 debuteerde in 1989 en liet zijn sporen na op basketbalvelden in het hele land. Na de eerste release werd de 550 gearchiveerd, vervolgens eind 2020 opnieuw uitgebracht in een gelimiteerde oplage en in 2021 weer opgenomen in de volledige collectie, waarna hij al snel een wereldwijde modehit werd. Het lage, gestroomlijnde silhouet van de 550 is een gestroomlijnde versie van het robuuste ontwerp uit de late jaren '80, terwijl de betrouwbare constructie van het bovenwerk van leer, synthetisch materiaal en mesh een klassieker blijft, ongeacht het tijdperk.
